A monkey that loves water!

These macaques are found in a variety of habitats, but preferably next to water: mangroves, marshes, swamps, river and sea banks… They are very good swimmers, and if they feed mainly on fruit, they also eat other plants and small animals, including crabs, hence their name!

It is a group composed of a male and 7 females that arrived in July 2018 in La Barben. Their history is special: former laboratory animals, they were destined for euthanasia. They were saved in extremis thanks to the mobilization of their caretaker at the time and the Tonga Terre d’Accueil association. We then decided to welcome them, in order to offer them a peaceful life… This new stage of their lives is crowned by a baby born in 2020, a symbol of natural behaviors and well-being!
