Arctictis binturong
A bear cat?!
The binturong is sometimes called “bear cat”, because of its particular appearance; However, it is part of the civet family. Living mainly in trees, it moves slowly and carefully, with the help of its prehensile tail.
Its habits are poorly known and seem to vary: it is sometimes nocturnal, sometimes active at dusk, or even during the day.
Unfortunately, it has become rare, as it is hunted for its meat, fur and traditional Chinese medicine. It is also a victim of animal trafficking (it is wanted as a pet) and deforestation. This is why since 2015 we have been supporting the actions of the Arctictis Binturong Conservation association, which works to save this species!
At La Barben…
Binturongs are back in 2023: a young couple shares a landscaped space with Asian otters. They arrived with us as part of an EEP (European Breeding Program), with the aim of breeding.
Don’t hesitate to look up to see them!
