Gibbon from Indonesia – Kalaweit Association

logo_kalaweit-DEFIndonesia’s forests are home to a rich and diverse fauna, including gibbons.
But they are threatened by massive deforestation, especially for the cultivation of oil palms: every minute, the equivalent of 4 football fields are destroyed!

In 1998, Chanee, a young Frenchman, created the Kalaweit association, in order to help the gibbons of Indonesia and their forest.

Today, this major project for the protection of these species carries out various actions:
• collection of captive gibbons, and other endangered animals, to return them to the wild after rehabilitation
• creation of reserves, by buying land
• Management of poorly or poorly protected reserves
• raising awareness among local populations about environmental protection, etc.

This association treats more than 400 gibbons and a hundred other animals, manages two rescue centers and has created 1000 hectares of reserve, integrating human populations at all levels.
The La Barben animal park has been supporting this programme since 2011, on projects such as the purchase of hectares of reserves, the reintroduction of gibbons, the construction of new aviaries, etc.
