Monkeys of Benin – Association ATO
“ATO” programme for primates in Benin
In Benin, monkeys (red-bellied monkeys, colobus monkeys, patas, vervet, mona monkeys, etc.) are often hunted or captured to serve as “pets”. But there was no structure to take care of injured, orphaned or confiscated animals…
In 2014, the French association ATO created the country’s first Primate Conservation Centre. The primary objective is to take in monkeys kept illegally and in unsatisfactory living conditions. More than 60 monkeys were rescued!
The association also develops actions to raise awareness of the respect and protection of primates, and to support the sustainable development of Beninese communities.
The La Barben animal park and Ecofaune have been supporting this association since 2015.
