Equus africanus somalicus
Desert Donkey
Robust yet elegant, this wild donkey is only found in the Horn of Africa, where it inhabits hilly, rocky deserts and arid savannahs.
With barely a few hundred individuals in the wild, this species is critically endangered. It is indeed a victim of hunting, competes with cattle for food and water, and hybridizes with domestic donkeys… In zoological parks, there are less than 200 individuals present (2022 data), which is why this species is managed very rigorously.
At the park, 4 donkeys cohabit with the gazelle oryx, which are also adapted to desert environments, and the watusis. They evolve in a new plain!
