A colossus on the verge of disappearing…

With a weight of up to 5 tons in Asian elephants and 7 tons in African elephants, the elephant is the heaviest land animal. In addition to its characteristic proboscis, it has a highly developed brain and an excellent memory.

Our park is home to only one individual, Dora, a female with the particularity of being visually impaired. This is probably why for her, the presence of another elephant was a source of stress. So we decided not to take in any more elephants, and since then she no longer shows any signs of discomfort! Rest assured, she is not alone: her keepers are taking care of her…

Elephants are unfortunately highly endangered animals, whether in Africa or Asia, they are poached for their horns and traditional Chinese medicine, and their habitat is increasingly destroyed…
The La Barben animal park is mobilizing to save them, by supporting the association “Des Éléphants et des Hommes”.
