The Desert Fox

The smallest of the fox family (less than 1.5 kg), the fennec is adapted to the sandy deserts in which it lives. Its thick, light fur reflects the sun’s heat and protects it on cold nights. The blood circulating in his large ears is cooled near the air and he can do without drinking, making do with the water contained in his diet! It is an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on insects and other small animals, but also on eggs, fruits, leaves…
Although it is widespread, the fennec is nevertheless becoming rarer, a victim of hunting (for its meat and fur) and especially of animal trafficking: it is sometimes captured and then tamed as a pet!

In La Barben, there is a couple, which you can observe in their building or in their park. Keep your eyes open, the fennecs know how to be discreet!
