Ailurus fulgens
A bamboo eater
The red panda has no connection with the Giant Panda: the word “Panda” comes from the Nepalese word Ponya meaning bamboo eater! They are also not related to raccoons or bears: despite the similarities, they are the only representatives of the Alurid family.
They live mainly in trees, where they move with ease thanks to their long tail serving as a pendulum, and their legs turned inwards.
This species is unfortunately threatened in its natural habitat, due to deforestation and animal trafficking. That’s why we are financially supporting a reforestation program in Nepal run by the Red Panda Network.
In 2022, our couple had cubs for the first time, 3 in number!
The ideal time to observe them: mid-morning, at breakfast time!
