Vultures of the Verdon – LPO PACA

LPO Agirpourlabio Edition PACAThe reintroduction of black vultures in the Verdon

As griffon vultures and black vultures have disappeared from the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region, many stakeholders have mobilized to reintroduce these emblematic birds to the Verdon gorges.
From 1999 to 2004, 91 griffon vultures (born in zoos or from care centres) were successfully reintroduced, since today this colony has more than 600 individuals!
Since 2005, the LPO PACA has been carrying out reintroductions of black vultures. 48 individuals were released, equipped with GPS beacons, in order to track their movements and habits!

At the same time, the LPO collects farmers’ losses and puts them in feeding plots so that these scavenging birds can feed.

We are happy to support these actions since 2019!
