The Barben Animal Park welcomes a new maned wolf. Averna, born 3 years old at Paignton Zoo in England, joins Picasso! This merger responds to the daily missions of the zoo to preserve endangered species. It was only made possible thanks to the approval of the European Breed Programme (EEP) coordinator of the species.
The EEP is a programme led by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) whose ultimate goal is to strengthen the wild population by adding specimens bred in zoos. To this end, coordinators are in charge, at the European level, of the various species most threatened. They coordinate, organize and advise zoos on their care. They also know the genetic characteristics of each animal in order to avoid inbreeding. Among their missions, there is also that of establishing the recommended reproduction number for the preservation of the species and choosing the zoos suitable to accommodate these births.
The transfer of Averna was therefore possible thanks to the EEP and the coordinator who authorized the zoo to become a breeding ground for the maned wolf for a period of four years. After a period of adaptation, Averna will enjoy her enclosure with her new companion Picasso.
