We are delighted to announce a birth among the maned wolves!
On February 9th, Averna, our maned wolf, gave birth to a pretty female, after 2 months of gestation. Born with a beautiful black coat, it begins to lighten to gradually adopt the beautiful red color of adults. At the age of one month, the vet checked her and chipped her, allowing us to attest to her good shape.
For the first few weeks, it remained hidden in the vegetation, it is thanks to its tips of ears protruding from the grass that our team was able to locate it! This behavior is typical of small maned wolves, but it should be more visible very soon.
This birth is excellent news for this emblematic species of the South American savannahs which is particularly threatened by hunting, road collisions, diseases and the destruction of natural spaces for agriculture and livestock farming. This is why it benefits from a European Breeding Program (EEP), set up by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and why we support the “Sou amigo do lobo” program that works to protect them in Brazil.
