Rare birth of striped hyenas!

We are delighted to announce Yuvatee and Ed’s first cubs!

This young female arrived at the park last year to meet our male. From the first mating season it worked: 3 months later, on July 10th, she gave birth well sheltered at the bottom of the den. The first weeks we only observed one little one, it was only in mid-August that we had the joy of discovering 3 pretty little heads!
Our vet had to crawl inside the cave and follow the galleries to check the health (which is excellent!), of the baby hyenas, as well as microchip and sex them. We now know that it is 2 males and a female who start to come out of the den to play and eat with their parents!

This birth is excellent news for our park as well as for the species: it is the first litter born and bred among European parks this year. This endangered and unloved species benefits from a European Breeding Programme (EEP): a group of specialists (including our biologist!) manages the striped hyenas present in the parks!
